5 out of 5 stars Remarkable RPG in 21th   August 10, 2010

As a beginner of JRPG, I must say this thank to a creator of this game. I strongly believe this is amazingly well-made story. If you are afraid of spending a lot of time to look for items or new quests, go for this one. This game do not push you walk around to find new quest. Furthermore, linear path will make you focus on preceding the story rather than being lost in the big world.
If you really enjoy the fantasy, go for this one too. This game will lead you into the unforgettable fantastic world. To sum up, If you want to taste JRPG world, this game will be the best choice and a starter.

4 out of 5 stars Not THAT bad; actually fun !   July 6, 2010

I didn't feel like writing a review, but after the many negative reviews I read I felt like I had to balance the gamers opinion. This is my FOCUS, yay !
All right.

First thing that comes to my mind about this game, and as most people said, it is beautiful; probably the most beautiful game I've ever played.

Then, the characters. Aside the fact that they're beautiful, not much indeed. They're interesting, though.

The story line is a bit too complex, I'll give you that one. Not that hard to understand either.

I think the most controversial part of this game is the gameplay. Well, I find it interesting. I'll admit, however, that during the battles I've been pressing the X key (PS3 controller) a helluva lot. Because of the auto-battle mode actually. At least, it's easy. The only thing that you have to think about is to use the right paradigm at the right time. Once you get the hang of it, it gets pretty fun.

It is linear, though, it's true.

To sum up, this game is beautiful and easy. If you want to have a good time, easily slaying monsters and watching beautiful landscapes and characters (I especially like Lightning), then this game is for you. If, however, you're looking for a challenge, then you'll be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Garbage   July 2, 2010

Most disappointing game ever.

I absolutely love the Final Fantasy series. I tend to buy the games right when they com out to get into a great story with amazing characters, and lose myself in the game for a while.
With FF XIII, I cannot.

I've already invested about 30-40 hours into the game but I just can't keep playing... it pains me when I do. When I have some time I'll sit down to play a little bit (because eventually I would like to finish it) however, after playing it for an hour or so or getting to another part of the game, I think to myself 'why am I still playing this garbage?' It truly feels like it's taking forever when I play it.

The characters are terrible, you don't like any of them because they are annoying... the script, the acting, the 'hero' as he calls himself. The game's storyline is so complex and ridiculous that no minor would understand it, yet the acting of the characters and the way they changed the espers (yes, I'm sticking with espers) it is intended for a child to enjoy.

Don't get me wrong, the graphics are amazing, but not even that would make me give the game more than 1 star. I see a lot of great looking games nowadays, not as nice as this one, but the rest of the game is absolute garbage.
No side missions, no exploring, no care for the characters... To the one review who said this was 'their first FF ever and loved it', you're missing out big time. If the next FF title that comes out is like this one, I will abandon the FF series forever (well, not really, they have to get it wrong once in a while I guess... ) I can't return it, but I'm going to sell it while the value is still higher. My first FF ever that I will never complete and want to get rid of for good.

2 out of 5 stars Horribly Unbalanced & Confusing   June 11, 2010

I was hoping for soo much more on Final Fantasy`s first outting on a Next Gen console and it is sad to say, but I was terribly dissapointed. I give 2 stars for the graphics in this game which are mindblowing near the end of the game, but aside form that the game is confusing in many different aspects and is way too streamlined. The difficulty is unbalanced to the point where each fight in the game begins to take 10 - 15 minutes. Rent before you buy. I`m going to do that for sure when the next one comes out. I`ve totally lost faith in Square now. Pitty.

4 out of 5 stars Perhaps the end of a dynasty   May 26, 2010

Cons:
Linear detailed story line
Battle System

Battle System

The Blog:

Well, I had waited a long time to play this game. I was so excited to open the case and slide the disk into my PS3.
The first 20-30 hours felt like I was playing a side scrolling game with the occasional interruption for a cut scene which attempted to produce a plot.
I don't think I have ever heard the word cocoon more then in final fantasy XIII. The dialog used is repetitive.

As for the battle system. The game designers get an A for the attempt to create something new and challenging. However, in doing so they removed all the fun out of playing a role playing game. I want to control my entire party not just one character. Perhaps this would have been better if it wasn't sudden death if the player controlled character didn't cause 'game over' when that one character is defeated.

There are few towns, with even less to do in them. There is like no money in the game. Okay, so Square Enix attempted to stop the standard town dungeon town dungeon boss role playing game system. It was nice for about 10 minutes to have something new. Then, it was boring.

This game failed to impress. With the exception of the absolutely stunning graphics. This is the most attractive game I have ever played. Visually FFXIII created a world I desperately wanted to be submersed in. Regretfully, a battle system that did not engage me as a player and a dull story line prevented me from being submersed in this game.

This game left me hungry for a classic RPG like FFVI or FFVII. I think it is time to return to basics by creating a blockbuster, engaging story. Entertaining characters that the player wants to play and a battle system that holds true to an RPG.

FFXIII bombed big time. If I could still return my copy, I would. If FFXIV does not impress, I will stop following this RPG dynasty franchise. Difficult words from someone who owns ever FF game he is able to own.

Rent before you buy.
